ITER Project

*What is ITER? ๐Ÿค”*

๐Ÿ”– *ITER* (originally the *International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor* ) is an international *nuclear fusion*☢️ research and engineering megaproject, which will be the *world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment* .

๐Ÿ”– It is an experimental *tokamak* nuclear fusion reactor that is being built next to the *Cadarache facility in Saint-Paul-lรจs-Durance, in Provence, southern France.*๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท*

WHAT IS FUSION?*

Fusion is the energy source of the Sun ☀️and stars✨. In the tremendous heat and gravity at the core of these stellar bodies, hydrogen nuclei collide, fuse into heavier helium atoms and release tremendous amounts of energy in the process.

WHAT IS A TOKAMAK?

The tokamak is an experimental machine designed to harness the energy of fusion. Inside a tokamak, the *energy produced through the fusion of atoms is absorbed as heat in the walls of the vessel.* Just like a conventional power plant, a fusion power plant will use this heat to produce steam and then electricity by way of turbines and generators.

WHAT WILL ITER DO?

1) Produce 500 MW of fusion power

2) Demonstrate the integrated operation of technologies for a fusion power plant

3) Achieve a deuterium-tritium plasma in which the reaction is sustained through internal heating

4) Test tritium breeding

5) Demonstrate the safety characteristics of a fusion device

ITER and India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

ITER Project in *2005* and the ITER Agreement between the partners was signed✍️ in *2006* .

๐Ÿ”– *ITER-India* is responsible for delivery of the following ITER packages:

*Cryostat* , In-wall Shielding, Cooling Water System, Cryogenic System, Ion-Cyclotron RF Heating System, Electron Cyclotron RF Heating System, Diagnostic Neutral Beam System, Power Supplies and some Diagnostics.

๐Ÿ”– Additionally, related R&D and experimental activities are being carried out at the ITER-India laboratory in *Gandhinagar, Gujarat.*

---------------------------------------------------
๐Ÿ”– *Larsen & Toubro (L&T)* Heavy Engineering flagged off the top lid of the *cryostat* , which is the *largest vessel* of its kind to be built in the world, with 4,000 tonnes of stainless steel. This lid built at *Hazira in Surat* will be installed with other cryostat segments in a reactor pit in Southern France.

๐Ÿ”– *50% of India’s contribution to ITER in France complete* : Project’s India head
